Tropes! Tropes everywhere!

Look, I admit these are sometimes overdone, or not always well done. But…I can’t help myself okay, so…just let me live!

Hate to love / Friends to lovers

Blame the hardcore fanfiction addict that I used to be for this one. This was one of the most prevalent tropes out there, and I fell for every one. The beauty of a blossoming relationship and two characters finally seeing each other for who they really are, just gets to me. I’m a sucker, so sue me!

10 things i hate about you

One of the first times I saw this trope used, and I loved it #10ThingsIHateAboutYou

Redemption arc

Who doesn’t love it when a character with less than stellar motives/personality etc shows some much-needed sense and grows into someone more likable? Just me? Oh well. Real life works very much like that so maybe that was why I liked that.

changed for good

Love changes everything? Maybe? #Wicked

Antagonists you just love to hate

Think the Darkling. He is the definition of evil and yet, he’s so bloody charismatic that you can’t help but fall under his spell. I gladly walk towards this evil.

the good kind of bad

Being bad isn’t always so bad.

Emotional endings / All of the angst!

There is clearly something very wrong with me that I voluntarily look for books that will break my heart and stomp on my feelings. But, it is what it is. I like the rollercoaster.

it hurts so good

Break me daddy!!!!

HEA

Even though I love angst, I want there to be some kind of payoff. There must be some semblance of the struggle was worth it. Unless the book tells me from the get-go that I’m not going to get that. (i.e TBDATE) or it’s done really well (i.e Our Dark Duet)

hea

Blame my obsession with fairy tales #DisneyGeneration #Disney5Ever

What tropes do you think you can’t help yourself with?

2018!!! – Books I’m looking forward to in the new year

aka The time I forgot that chronological order was a thing. I’m sorry.

OBSIDIO

BY JAY KRISTOFF AND AMIE KAUFMAN

24909347

Expected publication: March 13th 2018 by Knopf Books for Young Readers

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heros will fall, and hearts will be broken.

I’m hooked, and I NEED to know how this all ends for our band of characters. Plus, an action-packed sci-fi is never something you should pass up. The first two books in the series have been four stars for me, but I have high hopes that this one will surpass them both.

WHAT IF IT’S US

BY ADAM SILVERA AND BECKY ALBERTALLI

*no cover yet

What If It’s Us opens as Arthur and Ben meet at the post office as Ben is shipping his ex-boyfriend’s things back to him. They subsequently endure the frustration of knowing there was a missed connection, before the universe pushes them back together again in a series of failed “first” dates.

Expected publication: October 2nd 2018 by HarperTeen

Two things: Becky and Adam. You need more of a reason? Okay, it’s a possibly cavity-inducing definitely heart wrenching teen romance novel. You need this book in your life, I promise.

*LEGENDARY (CARAVAL 2)

BY STEPHANIE GARBER

33645809

Expected publication: May 29th 2018 by Flatiron Books

Stephanie Garber’s limitless imagination takes flight once more in the colorful, mesmerizing, and immersive sequel to the bestselling and breakout debut Caraval, following Scarlett’s younger sister, Tella, on a journey to the empire’s capital to fulfill a mysterious bargain.

The first book in this series was a creeper. I started off not being impressed and on the verge of dnf’ing, then it all changed. Now I’m invested in Tella, Scarlett and Legend’s story.

*UNEARTHED

BY AMIE KAUFMAN

Expected publication: January 9th 2018 by Disney-Hyperion

When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying’s advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered.

For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study… as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don’t loot everything first. Mia and Jules’ different reasons for smuggling themselves onto Gaia put them immediately at odds, but after escaping a dangerous confrontation with other scavvers, they form a fragile alliance.

In order to penetrate the Undying temple and reach the tech and information hidden within, the two must decode the ancient race’s secrets and survive their traps. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more their presence in the temple seems to be part of a grand design that could spell the end of the human race…

Their first collaboration series was entertaining, and gave me Illuminae feels. This one also reminds me of These Broken Stars and the Illuminae Files, so I’m curious. Maybe it will be the best parts of both and I will have found my new favorite series. Who knows?

CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE

BY TOMI ADEYEMI

34728667

Expected publication: March 6th 2018 by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving ZĂ©lie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now, ZĂ©lie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, ZĂ©lie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

If after reading that synopsis you still aren’t sold on this book (and this series) then there is NOTHING that I can say to you that will change your mind. It’s a fantasy series, there is royalty plot, there’s going to be battles, and romance. Like? GET. ON. THIS.

LEAH ON THE OFFBEAT

BY BECKY ALBERTALLI

31180248

Expected publication: April 24th 2018 by HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray

Leah Burke—girl-band drummer, master of deadpan, and Simon Spier’s best friend from the award-winning Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—takes center stage in this novel of first love and senior-year angst.

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high. It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended.

Have you read Simon? Are you going to see the movie? Well…then it’s clear why you NEED this book in your life (and why I’m desperate to have it in my hands). Leah is that badass, fiercely loyal best friend that you need but may not deserve. I want to see her get all the best things in her life.

YOU’LL MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE

BY RACHEL LYNN SOLOMON

30339479

Expected publication: January 2nd 2018 by Simon Pulse

Eighteen-year-old twins Adina and Tovah have little in common besides their ambitious nature. Viola prodigy Adina yearns to become a soloist—and to convince her music teacher he wants her the way she wants him. Overachiever Tovah awaits her acceptance to Johns Hopkins, the first step on her path toward med school and a career as a surgeon.

But one thing could wreck their carefully planned futures: a genetic test for Huntington’s, a rare degenerative disease that slowly steals control of the body and mind. It’s turned their Israeli mother into a near stranger and fractured the sisters’ own bond in ways they’ll never admit. While Tovah finds comfort in their Jewish religion, Adina rebels against its rules.

When the results come in, one twin tests negative for Huntington’s. The other tests positive.

These opposite outcomes push them farther apart as they wrestle with guilt, betrayal, and the unexpected thrill of first love. How can they repair their relationship, and is it even worth saving?

I’m already feeling the tears that this one is going to bring. This one is going to be REAL and REAL HARD to read.

THE QUEEN’S RISING

BY REBECCA ROSS

35098412

Expected publication: February 6th 2018 by HarperTeen

When her seventeenth summer solstice arrives, Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron.

Growing up in the southern Kingdom of Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her for such a life. While some are born with an innate talent for one of the five passions—art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge—Brienna struggled to find hers until she belatedly chose to study knowledge. However, despite all her preparations, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true—the solstice does not go according to plan and she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, and with no other choices, she accepts. But there is much more to his story, and Brienna soon discovers that he has sought her out for his own vengeful gain. For there is a dangerous plot being planned to overthrow the king of Maevana—the archrival kingdom of Valenia—and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the northern throne. And others are involved—some closer to Brienna than she realizes.

With war brewing between the two lands, Brienna must choose whose side she will remain loyal to—passion or blood. Because a queen is destined to rise and lead the battle to reclaim the crown. The ultimate decision Brienna must determine is: Who will be that queen?

Magic!!!! Action!!! Where do I sign up?

THE QUEENS OF INNIS LEAR

BY TESSA GRATTON

29982722

Expected publication: March 27th 2018 by Tor

The erratic decisions of a prophecy-obsessed king have drained Innis Lear of its wild magic, leaving behind a trail of barren crops and despondent subjects. Enemy nations circle the once-bountiful isle, sensing its growing vulnerability, hungry to control the ideal port for all trade routes.

The king’s three daughters—battle-hungry Gaela, master manipulator Reagan, and restrained, starblessed Elia—know the realm’s only chance of resurrection is to crown a new sovereign, proving a strong hand can resurrect magic and defend itself. But their father will not choose an heir until the longest night of the year, when prophecies align and a poison ritual can be enacted.

Refusing to leave their future in the hands of blind faith, the daughters of Innis Lear prepare for war—but regardless of who wins the crown, the shores of Innis will weep the blood of a house divided.

Tag yourself, I’m Elia. But also, why is he waiting so long to choose a successor? This is serious business man!

CITY OF GHOSTS

Pitched as Stranger Things meets Ghost Hunters, it’s the story of a girl who died, the ghost boy who brought her back, and their adventures in one of the world’s most haunted cities.

It is a universal fact that we are addicted to Stranger Things and so something that is marketed as anything close to this series is enough to pay attention. Plus it’s Victoria.

*not as high priority

What are you most looking forward to? Any of these?

Dee ^_^

It’s Christmas!!

aka I’ve waited until December to do this, feel proud of me.

giphy

Full disclosure, in my country we start Christmas early af, so waiting this long to spring this on you was the biggest exercise of self-control ever. Like there is a “100 days of Christmas” countdown! It’s serious! Also, since we don’t have ‘Thanksgiving’ it’s the biggest celebration we have at this time of the year.

So now that that’s settled, let’s get on with the actual tbr… it’s a short one. Ain’t no Trinbagonian getting reading time in the middle of cleaning and cooking for the season.

Two month Wrap up: Not the best, not the worst.

AKA the time I couldn’t even wrap up one month so I try for two instead (help me!!!)

So before I even begin talking about ratings, maybe I should just talk about which books I tried to finish in the past two months. Yeah? Sound like a plan? Good. Cause I won’t be able to change it at this point anyway. It’s already out in the universe…

ATTEMPTED, BUT NOT COMPLETED

It by Stephen King (November)

I had high hopes for this one, but I was such a distracted mess when I picked this one up that I didn’t even make it to halfway through. I’m hoping to have it finished soon though…if I don’t get distracted along the way. #Prayformyattentionspan2017

Wicked River by Jenny Milchman (October and November)

Another one that I had hoped to be done with by now but…those damn distractobots got me again *cries in self-pity*, also, Christmas cleaning has officially started in my house so…yeah.

The House on Foster Hill by Jamie Jo Wright (October)

I started this one pretty early on in the month…then I got Wicked River and well…you know the drill. Moving on…

I said MOVING ON!!

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins (October)

The trend continues…I have no excuse. Sometimes I am nothing more than a big old trash pile. Don’t sue me.

Now for the accomplishments!

Friday Reads!

aka that time I didn’t have a post ready so I went with this one.

This week, actually this month, has been pretty slow reading wise for me, so maybe telling you what I’m reading this weekend will motivate me to actually read.

So…enough stalling,

This

I’m

Reading

I feel like everyone and their grandchild knows the synopsis of It, but for the few of you who live under a rock –

To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine was just their home town: familiar, well-ordered for the most part. A good place to live.

It was the children who saw – and felt – what made Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one’s deepest dread. Sometimes IT reached up, seizing, tearing, killing . . .

The adults, knowing better, knew nothing.

Time passed and the children grew up, moved away. The horror of IT was deep-buried, wrapped in forgetfulness. Until they were called back, once more to confront IT as IT stirred and coiled in the sullen depths of their memories, reaching up again to make their past nightmares a terrible present reality

I haven’t gotten very far into this (this shit is MAMMOTH) but I see why people say this is one of his most memorable pieces. It’s a lot to take in.

Wicked River is set to come out in May 2018, and it’s also very intense. If it does it right, this one could definitely be a top contender in its genre.

Synopsis:

Six million acres of Adirondack forest separate Natalie and Doug Larson from civilization. For the newlyweds, an isolated, back country honeymoon seems ideal: a chance to start their lives together with an adventure, on their own. But just as Natalie and Doug begin to explore the dark interiors of their own hearts, as well as the depths of their love for each other, it becomes clear that they are not alone in the woods.

Because six million acres makes it easy for the wicked to hide. And even easier for someone to go missing for good.

As they struggle with the worst the wilderness has to offer, a man watches them, wielding the forest like a weapon. And once they are near his domain, he will do everything in his power to make sure they never walk out again

Tell me that doesn’t sound intriguing to you?

Anyhoo, I’ll get back to it.

Dee ^_^

Try this! – A mish-mash of recommendations

aka that time I force my opinions down your throat, maybe?

I’ve always been interested in these kinds of ideas and thought, why not give it a try. So here we are, with me pretending that I know what I’m doing with this. Hopefully, I introduce you all to some new things…(or reaffirm your thoughts on them).

The Shining

11588

A haunting look at the descent into madness.

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote…and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

What works for The Shining is how isolated and helpless to escape their fate our characters are. Off Season by Jack Ketchum features a cast that is on an equally inevitable path to destruction.

179734

Lulls you into a temporary state of calm and then BAM!

It’s gory, for sure, so if that’s something that you can’t handle then give this one a pass. But, Ketchum gives you glimpses of our hunters and the hunted and you feel for both groups in a way that leaves you confused about who you’re rooting for. The ending as well…it got me good.

A Wrinkle in Time

18131

Kids to the RESCUE!!!

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

“Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract”.

Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space.

You like children on adventures? Are you a fantasy lover who’s always up for a bit of magic? Then Terry Pratchett’s The Wee Free Men is the one for you.

34211767

All of the action! So much spunk!

Armed only with a frying pan and her common sense, Tiffany Aching, a young witch-to-be, is all that stands between the monsters of Fairyland and the warm, green Chalk country that is her home. Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnapped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk’s local Nac Mac Feegle – aka the Wee Free Men – a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny. Together they battle through an eerie and ever-shifting landscape, fighting brutal flying fairies, dream-spinning dromes, and grimhounds – black dogs with eyes of fire and teeth of razors – before ultimately confronting the Queen of the Elves, absolute ruler of a world in which reality intertwines with nightmare. And in the final showdown, Tiffany must face her cruel power alone…

Tiffany is the kind of girl you want fighting battles for you. She has a single-minded determination and overcomes obstacles like nobody’s business. And those little men are strange in all the right ways. Give it a try.

Or you can try: Gregory and the Grimbockle, a new release that just tugs at you.

36065749

The soundtrack is beautiful and the art is pure whimsy.

Ten-year-old Gregory is about to find out that the enormous mole stuck straight beneath his nose is not just a mole, but is actually a humpy crumpy portal of skin that hides a creature called the Grimbockle.

What’s more? The Grimbockle is just one of the many strange little creatures called Bockles tending to the mysterious threads that connect all humans from one to the other. It is a very important job and one that has long been carried out with incredible secrecy…

…that is, before tonight.

Gregory is an outcast, who you can’t help but want to protect, in a family that could work on communication and affection. I also love that this book reminds us that human connections are OUR responsibility and that there are no magical creatures running around fixing it for us. Put in the work.

Black Dagger Brotherhood

6606305

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams

Sexy, protective vampires fighting to keep their world secret and safe, all while protecting the human race. Easily binge-worthy material. On par with this series is the Midnight Breed series.

9970831

Part human, part otherworldly, the Breed has lived among humankind for thousands of years, maintaining a tentative peace built on secrecy, power, and the dark justice carried out by the formidable warriors of the Order.

But now, a blood war within the race is set to ignite. Vampires are going Rogue in startling numbers, feeding without discretion, killing humans in the streets. It is up to the Order to stop the spreading threat of Rogue domination — and in so doing, each of the warriors will be forced to confront private demons, darkest secrets, deepest fears. Some will know triumph, some will know loss, but each warrior can count on one thing: Love, when it finds him, will often come at the worst possible moment, with the least likely woman . . . and it will bring each of these powerful males to his knees.

Also, if you love loooong series, then both these are right up your alley. So. Many. Books!

Homegoing

Literary fiction at its finest.

27071490

Two half-sisters, Effia and Esi, are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery

If heart-tugging literary fictions that span years/generations then Homegoing and A Thousand Splendid Suns are both for you. They have it in spades.

128029

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them – in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul – they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman’s love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival

It was the perfect trip…until it wasn’t.

Eighteen-year-old Jill Charron wakes up in a hospital room, leg in a cast, stitches in her face and a big blank canvas where the last six weeks should be. She discovers she was involved in a fatal car accident while on a school trip in Italy. A trip she doesn’t even remember taking. She was jetted home by her affluent father in order to receive quality care. Care that includes a lawyer. And a press team. Because maybe the accident…wasn’t an accident.

As the accident makes national headlines, Jill finds herself at the center of a murder investigation. It doesn’t help that the media is portraying her as a sociopath who killed her bubbly best friend, Simone, in a jealous rage. With the evidence mounting against her, there’s only one thing Jill knows for sure: She would never hurt Simone. But what really happened? Questioning who she can trust and what she’s capable of, Jill desperately tries to piece together the events of the past six weeks before she loses her thin hold on her once-perfect life

When this book first came out it was EVERYWHERE! Every booktuber and book blogger was raving about it, and I wasn’t buying the hype. Well…this was well warranted. Another book that deserves the hype is If I Die Before I wake by Emily Koch.

How Do You Solve Your Own Murder?

Everyone believes Alex is in a coma, unlikely to ever wake up. As his family debate withdrawing life support, and his friends talk about how his girlfriend Bea needs to move on, he can only listen.

But Alex soon begins to suspect that the accident that put him here wasn’t really an accident. Even worse, the perpetrator is still out there and Alex is not the only one in danger.

As he goes over a series of clues from his past, Alex must use his remaining senses to solve the mystery of who tried to kill him, and try to protect those he loves, before they decide to let him go.

Mystery/Thriller, unreliable narrator. Check, and check. Both these books leave you confused and enthralled and 100% invested. Oh, and the settings are pretty similar too: hospital rooms, so…

Guilty Pleasure: Movies Edition

Remember that one time when I told you all my favorite TV shows, and said that I might share my favorite movies? Well, you’re welcome!

Grease (1978)

grease

I honestly couldn’t tell you how old I was when I first saw this gem, but I can tell you that I was hooked from the first instance. The singing, the dancing! Danny Zuko in those tiiiight jeans! Rizzo and her hot mess storyline, and sweet, innocent Sandy. I wanted to be a part of the gang.

This is probably why I became addicted to redemption arcs.

Hairspray (2007)

hairspray

The body positivity and overall message of loving your brother regardless of race, size or social standing just tugged at my heartstrings. This is one of those shows that just stay with you forever.

Plus, it’s a musical and musicals are my weakness…soooo…yeah.

Would it be obvious if I said the HP movies? Yes? Ohhhhh well…

Harry Potter (1 -7)

harry potter

To this day there are very few books that I can say have resonated with me as with the HP series, and that love translates as equally to the movies. There is no particular time that I watch these movies, whenever it’s on, I sit there and binge. Or sometimes the mood will hit and I’ll have my own personal marathon.

I even converted mummy, so I feel like my life’s work is complete!

Pretty Woman (1990)

iconic-Rodeo-Drive-win

Judge not, lest ye be judged. This movie taught me that lesson in the most real-world way imaginable. Also, the reason I love rags to riches tropes as well. You know what? That’s going to be my next guilty pleasures list.

Pretty much any Molly Ringwald/John Hughes movie

molly ringwald

Quintessential eighties nostalgia wrapped up in a movie. Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles…etc…, I love them all. Molly is the constant underdog who rises to the top…

Honorable mentions

Hocus Pocus (1993)

hocus pocus

When is the second one coming? They’ve been teasing it for ages, and I’m only getting older and pining away. What are you doing to me???

Scary Movie 2 (2001)

Scary-movie-2-o

Yes, it’s hella problematic, but I just can’t help it. I laugh at all the same places regardless of how many times I’ve seen it. What is wrong with me??

There are so much more than just these 2 but…if I don’t stop here I’ll make a list that’s at least 20 movies long…

Until next time, keep reading/watching
