A – Z Book Survey

I came upon this one over at About words and worlds a while ago but now seems like the best time to put this one up.

Author you’ve read the most books from:

Charlaine Harris…according to Goodreads*…but that’s mainly because she wrote a massive series that I gobbled up when I was younger. Never finished reading Sookie’s story though.

*these stats are from the last time I checked. This feature is no longer available so I can’t be sure without spending a really long time going through all of the books that I’ve read.

Best Sequel Ever:

This is a hard one, but maybe Legendary by Stephanie Garber? It made me fall in love with the world in a way that Caraval didn’t. I became much more interested in the characters which I had considered as mere plot drivers before. If you weren’t sure if the series was worth continuing, give Legendary a try. It’ll be the deciding factor.

Currently Reading:

Only Human (The Themis Files #3) by Sylvain Neuvel. I’m going to be sad to say goodbye to Themis and all the chaos that was created by her discovery, but at the same time, I really wanna see how this all ends.

Drink of Choice While Reading:

Do you expect any answer besides coffee? If you do, then you need to reconsider your values.

E-reader or Physical Book?

Both!! The feel of a book in your hand, the smell of their crisp new pages *bliss* and then the ebook is just so bloody convenient! Don’t make me choose!

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

*insert any emotionally unavailable character here* I didn’t make good choices. If we’re talking about the character I’d like to have dated then that’s easier. There’s Kavinsky, Blue…I could go on. Basically someone *soft*

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I know, I knooow, everyone and their grandma loves the Studio Ghibli version, but sometimes popular things work for me. This time it did. Just the right touch of whimsy.

Hidden Gem Book:

I still think more people need to read Tiny Infinities by J. H. Diehl. The simplicity of this book deserved to be experienced by more people. It has less than 200 ratings on Goodreads.

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

I don’t have a specific *moment* but I can still remember every weekend going into my aunt’s library and having free reign. There was no turning away from books after that.

Just Finished:

This book was recommended to me when I asked for people’s favourite audiobooks, and as far as that aspect goes, it certainly doesn’t disappoint. There are a few other elements that it does well (but those are for another time).

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

I will push through most things…but I will NOT suffer myself through bad writing/poor editing, no matter how good the story is.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

Goodreads says 1276 for the Count of Monte Cristo, but like????? so I’ll go with one that I ACTUALLY remember reading (that isn’t a textbook): David Copperfield – 974. I never realized that this book was so long, honestly. It just never registered.

Major book hangover because of:

You can find my thoughts on this one: here.

Number of Bookcases You Own:

There is only one answer for this: Not. Enough. But if we’re going to be literal or whatever, then shamefully one. E-Books and the library have been good to me.

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

Any of the Harry Potter Books, the Twilight books (and what?) and Carry On. Each of these hold a special place in my heart, for both their ships and their plot.

Preferred Place To Read:

Anywhere that I can get a few moments of peace and quiet, which is usually my bedroom, but wherever.

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

Quote that defines me: The problem with books is that they end ~ Caroline Kepnes

Quote that shook me to the core: I don’t need an apology. If you’re fine with your decision, that’s on you. – Adam Silvera.

Reading Regret:

Not enough time in the day to read? I don’t really have any.

Series You Started And Need To Finish(all books are out in series):

There. Are. So. Many. But the first that comes to mind is the Shades of Magic series. I’m a champion procrastinator if you couldn’t tell.

Three of your All-Time Favourite Books:

Oh no. Why is this a question that ever needs to be asked???? Gah! What if it’s Us, Carry On and…They Both Die at the End. That was the hardest decision that I’ve eveeer had to make. Don’t make me do it again. Please.

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

This one has MANY answers. There’s Adam Silvera, Marissa Meyer, Leigh Bardugo, Victoria Schwab and ofc Queen J. K.

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

September 24, 2019 CANNOT COME FAST ENOUGH!!!!!

Worst Bookish Habit:

Starting books and then not finishing them (even though I’m enjoying it), just because I’ve gotten a shiny new story to read or don’t want it to end.

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

I’m itching to start this one!!!

Your latest book purchase:

Same as above.

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

*laughs into infinity*

Ok, since sleep is my greatest enemy, this question isn’t feasible. Instead, I’ll tell you the first book that kept me up after a year-long reading slump – More Happy Than Not. I could not put it down. It made me excited about reading again. Honestly, Adam is a life saver.

Fictional Faves

aka I didn’t finish the Tag so I made one of my own?

Favorite Uncle

That one character that you wish was in your family.

Sirius ‘my heart is yours’ Black.

p.s. You can choose an aunty too! No discriminating. I just wanted to be able to include Sirius so I used uncle.

Favorite Troublemaker

This is self-explanatory, right? Trouble and this character are symbiotic.

Kaz ‘what are feelings’ Brekker. Granted, his trouble is always for the benefit of his crew, but still! Chill sometimes, yeah?

(Or the Weasely twins)

Favorite Magical Couple

Their magic doesn’t just stop when the fighting is over.

Simon and Baz (gah, the swooning) made even swoonier by my recent re-read.

Favorite non-magical Couple

So magic doesn’t flow in their veins, but it’s in their blood.

Simon and Blue (maybe my favorite thing is guys named Simon?) But also, gaaah! The mushiness is real with these two.

Favorite best friend duo/group.

Their friendship almost rivals the greatest love stories in history.

Since I created this I’m going to cheat a little and say AIDAN and Kady. I mean, is he not merciful? Ha!

If you do this one, please tag me, I’d love to hear your answers.

20 Questions Book Tag

Happy weekend everybody! This one I saw over at Kristin Kraves Books. It’s a long one so strap in!

How many books is too many in a series?

With the exception of Harry Potter or books of that quality, I’d say anything more than five. After that, it can feel a bit forced like the author is just rolling them out for the sake of a paycheck.

How do you feel about cliffhangers?

If done well, send them my way. Otherwise, no thanks…I don’t need that kinda negativity in my life. Lol

Hardback or paperback?

Practically, whichever one gets me the story. Aesthetic wise I’d prefer hardbacks. They’re always so pweeetty.

Favorite book?

Yeesh! What kind of…if I haaaad to choose I’d say Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but honestly it varies by genre and mood.

Least favorite book?

Zoo by James Patterson. I still can’t get over how awful that was.

Love triangles. Yes or No?

I mean the same applies here…if it’s done well then I’d take it otherwise…

The most recent book you couldn’t finish?

I haven’t dnf’d anything since last year: Scrapbooking Mystery #9.

A book you’re currently reading?

I’m too ashamed to name any because I started them all soooooo long ago.

The last book you recommended to someone?

Easy. Simon vs. Everyone needs to Love, Simon. (When will it get here?!)

The oldest book you’ve read (publication date)?

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Apparently, this was originally published in 1485?! According to Goodreads anyway.

The newest book you’ve read (publication date)?

Spectacle Vol. 1 which doesn’t come out until May 22nd.

Favorite author?

This one is similar to favorite book and completely depends on mood and genre, but Adam Silvera is slowly becoming an all-around favorite.

Buying or borrowing?

As much as I’d love to buy every book that I want to read, realistically I’m not at that place in my life…so borrowing. I’m broke yo.

A book you dislike that everyone seems to love?

Going strictly by Goodreads, I’d have to say The Elite.

Bookmark or dog ears?

Bookmarks all the way but sometimes you really don’t have a choice.

A book you can always reread?

Any Harry Potter book, but I’m not a big rereader. I always say that I want to reread something and never get to it.

Can you read while hearing music?

Only if it’s instrumentals or not anything that I’d want to sing along to.

One POV or multiple?

It doesn’t really bother me either way.

One sitting or multiple days?

I’d have to say multiple days because I hardly ever have the chance to sit uninterrupted long enough to finish a book in one go.

A book you’ve read because of the cover?

I’m a superficial buyer: if it looks good, chances are I’m going to pick it up. If the summary is also good? Well…the answer is obvious. So…most of my reads are due to the cover

Christmas Tag

happy holidays

I hope you all are ready for that influx of family and forced family time over the next few days. I’m not.

34th st

Harry Potter all day, every day!

This one has so many possible answers: Belle/Matilda/Jo March. I was (still am) always stuck in a book just like these characters. Of course, my life was never anywhere near as dramatic as these women’s but…you know. Also, HP was my entire childhood.

home alone

1984 by George Orwell which speaks to the government being overly involved in our daily lives (I see you Big Brother). It was a worry then, and it’s a worry now.

T.H.U.G. by Angie Thomas. This one I’m predicting just based off of its current impact alone. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of my own.

This one might hurt some feelings for those Selection lovers out there but The Elite by Kiera Cass. Girl why???? Book one was mushy and fluffy and all of the good things about YA Romance and then came book two with an unnecessarily dragged out love triangle. Nah. Nah!

The Graveyard Book, mainly because there were so many more things I wanted to learn about the characters. I didn’t want Nobody to ever leave that cemetery. More please Mr. Gaiman. Please!

Aaaanyway, this is the last post from me until after Boxing Day (Dec. 26) as that’s my grandfather’s birthday. Lots to do!

End of Year Tag

aka Where did 2017 go????? Honestly???

I’ve seen this one floating around and thought, why the hell not? So here goes. A thing:

1. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

Wait, this is an actual question? There are so many because that’s my modus operandi honestly. Top priority would be:

I started the Nicholas Flamel in February and kept getting distracted along the way, but I am determined to finish this series. Same for the Stephanie Perkins as well.

2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

Um..no. First of all we only have two seasons in my part of the world: rainy and dry. Aside from that, I’m more focused on Christmassy books.

3. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

Nah, I’m looking forward to 2018 releases though!

4. What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

Aside from my TBR for this month (which is ambitious enough considering how little time I usually have for myself in December) I wish I could fit in

5. Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?

If I ever finish it:

6. Have you already started making reading plans for 2018?

I am the queen of making plans (and not following through) so the answer is unreservedly YES. My reading goals will be coming soon, so stay tuned for that.

I’m not going to pressure anyone to do this tag so, if you want to then feel free.

Horror Villains Halloween Tag

aka This one is ALL MINE (as far as I know)

I created this one last Halloween, and never got around to posting it. Idk how come I never posted it, but, I’m doing it now!!

jason vorhees
A series that just won’t die (seriously, how many books do you need?)

The Southern Vampire Mysteries. Don’t get me wrong, it was a series that I enjoyed while I was reading it, then it just kept grooooowing, and growing. I can’t.

A book that started off cute/fluffy/safe and quickly broke your heart/escalated

This one can have a couple answers, but my first initial answer is Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I mean, that ending!

Aisde from that I would choose Carry On by Rainbow Rowell or This Savage Song by V. E. Schwab, both of which were slow burns. You go into them expecting a lot to happen, but it doesn’t. Not until you’ve let your guard down.

pet sematary
A character that bought his/her headache as cheap as it comes

Jackson Oz of Zoo by James Patterson. I mean, he already KNEW about the changes happening with the animals, and yet he has a PET CHIMPANZEE. I am STILL not over this stupidity.

fenrir greyback
Favorite hybrid/shifter story

Full disclosure: I haven’t read very many of these (outside of fanfiction, which I can’t remember half the names of so I can’t rec them here), so my choices are limited. At face value, and the emotions that I  remember having while reading this book, I’d have to say Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater.

Favorite paranormal/horror anthology

By default, October Country by Ray Bradbury. It’s the best of the ones I’ve read, so….

Please rec me your favorites???

Favorite adult vampire/paranormal books

Toss up between Black Dagger Brotherhood by J R Ward and Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian. Both hooooot and action packed. If you want to read about a clan of vampires protecting the world from other vampires, with a heavy helping of sex and romance, this is where you start.

freddy krueger
A high fantasy book that you enjoyed

There are so many beautiful options for this one, there’s Heartless and Winter by Marissa Meyer, The Wee Free Men (Discworld) by Terry Pratchet and of course The Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum. The characters, the world, the adventure!

the alien
A horror that features a non-human, non-vampire/shifter character

Off Season by Jack Ketchum. My lord does this book give: The Hills Have Eyes type of vibes. Yiiikes. There is so much gore! Soooo much (and I definitely need to see the movie that I heard it was made into).

A book that scared you beyond words/started your love of the genre

Goosebumps and Fear Street was where it all began. I can still remember staying up on weekends flying through these books. Aaah, the memories.

A character that had a complete turnaround (Predator vs Alien version)

The easy answer would be The Darkling (Grisha series), I mean, the way he started the series is NOT the way he enters book two! But there’s also Jamie Lannister and The Hound from GOT (but since I’ve only watched the tv series and not read the book…)

Until next Halloween,

The Princess Sidekick Book Tag

I saw this one on Thrice Read and it looks fuuuuun!

princess tag

Mushu from Mulan & Olaf & Sven from Frozen | The Comic Relief –

  • Name your favorite hilarious character or your favorite comedy/funny book

Hands down Jesper from the Six of Crows dualogy. He was such a troublemaker.

The Seven Dwarfs from Snow White | Favorite Group/Ensemble

The group from the Lunar Chronicles. They fit together so well.

Pascal from Tangled | The loyal cheerleader chameleon (not a frog, Flynn Rider) –

  • Name a book that started out one way but changed for you

This one is a bit harder for me to decide. I’m torn between Caraval and Will Grayson x2 both of which started off pretty rocky and with little emotional attachment but then ended up growing on me.

Meeko from Pocahontas | Pocahontas’s sly and sneaky raccoon friend –

  • Name a plot twist that you did not see coming

The ending of With Malice. *insert mind blowing sound effects here* Honestly, shook.

Rajah from Aladdin & Flounder from The Little Mermaid | Gentle with their princess but protective with everyone else –

  • Name your favorite best friend in a novel

Cinder and Iko in the Lunar Chronicles. She kept Cinder grounded and reminded her to have fun every once in a while.

Cogsworth, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, & Chip from Beauty and the Beast | The Musical Bunch –

  • Name a novel where music played a big part or made you want to sing its praises

There are a lot of books that I want to sing their praises, so to make my life easy, I’ll choose a book where music is integral. Eleanor and Park, it was their strongest bond. It was cute even if Rainbow Rowell stomped on my heart with that ending. Hmph.

Maximus from Tangled | The obstacle in Flynn Rider’s way –

  • Name a character that faces a lot of obstacles

I really wanna say Kaz (Six of Crows) but I used this book already *weh*, so instead Karou from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. I swear, everytime she took one step forward there were like ten back. Gah!

Hamish, Hubert, & Harris from Brave | Favorite family dynamics in a novel

The Upside of Unrequited – this family was real. They weren’t perfect but they worked and they gave me all the feels.

Ray from The Princess and the Frog & 3 Fairies from Sleeping Beauty | The Advice Givers –

  • Book that most impacted your life

Hei Hei from Moana | Name a character that steals the show

Dorrance from Insomnia (Stephen King) was a strange old man who I just wanted to hug and sit around and listen to him babble on about the things that aren’t visible to all of us.

Gus & Jaq from Cinderella | Opposites Attract –

  • Name your favorite or worst opposite attracts pairing

Daemon and Katie from Obsidion (Jeniffer L. Armentrout). Ugh.

Feel free to join in on this one!

Literally My Life (in book titles)

It’s book tag time guys. This time, I’m doing a tag that’s been making the rounds on booktube (Jesse the Reader and BooksandLala etc.) and I thought I’d join in cuz it looked like fun.

The Story of Your Life – Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell) because I belong to all the fandoms and fan all of the things!!!

Your Perfect Weekend – Beach House (James Patterson), just give me the ocean and a nice cozy place to enjoy some peace and quiet and I’m golden.

Adventure you’d like to go on – Around the World in Eighty Days (Jules Verne). I mean, who wouldn’t want to travel the world? Even better if it’s for free, amirite?!!

Your children in book titles – Queen of Hearts (Colleen Oakes) for the name Heart, it’s so unsual but I like it. Gabriel’s Inferno (Sylvain Reynard) for a boy. Idk.

Ideal Job – Made You Up (Francesca Zappia) in the sense that I want to write and live in the literary world. Does this even make any sense? I hope so…

Place You’d like to Visit – Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide (J. K. Rowling). Duh.

Your Love Life – Club Dead (Charlaine Harris) cuz there is no bringing that back to life. Or maybe Slightly Single (Wendy Markham) because I’m confused okay.

Question you ask Yourself – Everything, Everything (Nicola Yoon). This might be a cop out, but I’m forever curious and questioning things so I figured this works.

Title a Kingdom – Persepolis: The story of a childhood (Marjane Satrapi) idk what kind of kingdom it would be but it sounds futuristic and SFF-esque. Take me there.

Title your Band – Tone Deaf (Olivia Rivers). I should not be in charge of musicality. Nope. Nope. Nope.

Current Mood – Sleeping Beauty (Elle Lothlorian) Zzzzz…

Favorite color – Shattered Blue (Lauren Bird Horowitz). Any shade of blue, any day of the week.

YouTube besties – Um…imma just skip this one…

2017 so far – It Lives in the Basement (Sahara Foley), my year has been horrid. Ugh. It can only get better, right?

Summer plans – Girl Reading (Katie Ward). #CantStopWontStop

2017 goals – More Than This (Patrick Ness). This year has been…a let down, at best. So, more please!

This was just a fun little tag, I hope you enjoyed it.

I tag YOU!
