Ah, cheri! – Romance Recommendations

aka I love, love!

This list is specifically books that have romance as it’s main plot point, and where one of it’s top 5 tags on goodreads is romance. These books make you feel mushy and in love with love all over again. No tears either, well no ugly crying type of tears anyway.

This entire series

Lara Jean and her many crushes are sugary sweet. But, LJ and Peter Kavinsky? My heart cannot bear it.

Crush: a strong and often short-lived infatuation, particularly for someone beyond your reach…

Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She’s travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. That’s the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty—ever since, she’s had to learn to settle for good enough.

When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they’re left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property. Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom’s arrived, he’s bearing power tools, and he’s single for the first time in almost a decade.

Suddenly Darcy’s considering sticking around to make sure her twin doesn’t ruin the cottage’s inherent magic with his penchant for grey and chrome. She’s definitely not staying because of her new business partner’s tight t-shirts, or that perfect face that’s inspiring her to pick up her camera again. Soon sparks are flying—and it’s not the faulty wiring. It turns out one percent of Tom’s heart might not be enough for Darcy anymore. This time around, she’s switching things up. She’s going to make Tom Valeska 99 percent hers.

Tom Valeska is one of those hard candies that, once you rack that tough exterior, you will not be disappointed. Darcy is equally as tough shelled and if I could have blanked out all of Jamie then it’d be even better. It’s definitely worth putting up with his atrocious behavior though.

Tiffy Moore and Leon Twomey each have a problem and need a quick fix.

Tiffy’s been dumped by her cheating boyfriend and urgently needs a new flat. But earning minimum wage at a quirky publishing house means that her choices are limited in London.

Leon, a palliative care nurse, is more concerned with other people’s welfare than his own. Along with working night shifts looking after the terminally ill, his sole focus is on raising money to fight his brother’s unfair imprisonment.

Leon has a flat that he only uses 9 to 5. Tiffy works 9 to 5 and needs a place to sleep. The solution to their problems? To share a bed of course…

As Leon and Tiffy’s unusual arrangement becomes a reality, they start to connect through Post-It notes left for each other around the flat.

Can true love blossom even in the unlikeliest of situations?
Can true love blossom even if you never see one another?
Or does true love blossom when you are least expecting it?

I picked this one after finishing Bird Box and Station Eleven and needed something light and mushy. I got mushy that’s for sure, but these character’s life stories are heartbreaking. But they still managed to have so many sweet and carefree moments even still that I couldn’t help but fall in love with their relationship. I even fell in love with the side characters.

Out April 18

Talk about an embarrassing introduction. On her first day of law school, Kailyn ran – quite literally – into the actor she crushed on as a teenager, ending with him sprawled on top of her. Mortified to discover the Daxton Hughes was also a student in her class, her embarrassment over their meet-cute quickly turned into a friendship she never expected. Of course, she never saw his betrayal coming either…

Now, eight years later, Dax is in her office asking for legal advice. Despite her anger, Kailyn can’t help feeling sorry for the devastated man who just became sole guardian to his thirteen-year-old sister. But when her boss gets wind of Kailyn’s new celebrity client, there’s even more at stake than Dax’s custody issues: if she gets Dax to work at their firm, she’ll be promoted to partner.

The more time Kailyn spends with Dax and his sister, the more she starts to feel like a family, and the more she realizes the chemistry they had all those years ago is as fresh as ever. But will they be able to forgive the mistakes of the past, or will one betrayal lead to another?

Oh gosh this one. Dax and Kailyn together 😍😍😍. Their banter and the way they work as a team towards Emme’s best interest. I don’t want to say too much as this one hasn’t come out yet,but just know…You should read this.

Out April 9

Nemesis (n.)
1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome;
2) A person’s undoing;
3) Joshua Templeman.

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.
Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

I think my favorite thing about Sally Thorne is her character’s banter with each other. Plus the inner monologue of the main characters was hilarious to witness. Maybe skip the audio for this one though as there were times that I wasn’t sure if Lucy was imagining something or if it was really happening. She has a vivid imagination.

Do you have any recommendations? Have you read any of these? Do you plan to?

Best books of 2018 – so far.

Aka I’ve missed you!

It feels good to be back, but I’m going to be taking this slow. We don’t want my mojo to disappear again…

Without further ado, I give you the five books that I haven’t been able to forget about since I’d read them. 5 stars only of course, because otherwise there was no way I could narrow this list down to anything reasonable.

The Hate U Give

I cannot wait for this movie, which I hope does justice to the book because this book deserves our best. It’s raw so don’t expect to use it to escape from the real world but it’s also entertaining and beautiful. Well worth the hype if you ask me. Starr is one of the better characters I’ve ever come across.

Leah on the Offbeat

This one has caused split opinions in the book community and I seem to be in the minority for my love of THIS version of Leah over Simon’s Leah. I understood this Leah’s motives and emotions a lot better than I did when I first met her in Simon vs. I think you should give this one a try and form your own opinions though.

Carry On

I’m so pleased that I still love this one! That it wasn’t just me being caught up in the hype of the fandom. I read this while in a completely different mindframe than the first time around, and yet I still loved it. Baz and Simon were still overly adorable and hopeless and gah! I can’t wait for book 2.

HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban

This has always been my favorite of the HP books mainly because we meet Sirius and we finally get rid of Scabbers. Ugh. Plus, the time turner is an invention that I reaaaally wish was real.

Tiny Infinities

This one just resonated with me. I cannot get it out of my mind. It’s so simple and beautiful, I need more stories like these. Plus, would you look at THAT COVER?! I mean, come on!

To be fair, I had quite a few 5 star reads this year, that could easily have made it onto this list, but these are my top 5. It was hard to choose just five though.

Which books have stuck with you so far?

How well does Goodreads know me pt 2

The first time I attempted to do this it went well and I said that I’d do it again for my 5 star shelf. Well…turns out the recommendations weren’t much different. So here I go again with a themed shelf instead: Graphic Novels.

Before I begin it’s worth noting that there is one thing all these books have in common: Manga Classics – Emma by Po Tse. The other recommendations (not included in this list) were all based on either A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness or Daniel X: Alien Hunter by James Patterson.

Bloom’s Discovery (Winx Club) by Iginio Straffi

A group of fairy friends learn to hone their magic while fighting evil and darkness!Reads L to R (Western Style) Meet the Winx Club, a group of beautiful fairies who fight evil using their unique magical powers! As they battle scary monsters and trouble-making witches, the girls become stronger fairies and closer friends. Bloom’s Discovery Before Bloom became part of the Winx Club, she was living a normal teenager’s life. All that changed one day when she discovered that she’s actually a fairy! Now Bloom’s life is anything but ordinary as she uses her magic to fight wicked villains.

Will I read it- Nope. Just…nope.

Kingdom Hearts II Vol 1 by Shiro Amano

A young boy named Roxas whiles away the last days of his summer vacation with his three best friends in their quiet little home of Twilight Town. But all is not as it should be in this hamlet nestled between night and day. Strange things keep happening around Roxas, which always seem to involve mysterious creatures…and he is plagued by dreams of a boy named Sora, whom he has never met. Bewildered, Roxas searches for answers . . . Will they lead him to Sora, Donald, and Goofy?

Will I read it- I’m confused…am I meant to have read Kingdom Hearts I? Is there a Kingdom Hearts I?

Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea by Ben Clanton

Narwhal is a happy-go-lucky narwhal. Jelly is a no-nonsense jellyfish. The two might not have a lot in common, but they do they love waffles, parties and adventures. Join Narwhal and Jelly as they discover the whole wide ocean together.

Will I read it- Do you see how cute this cover is? Have you read that tooth-aching summary? Of course, I will!

My Little Pony by Alex de Campi

Introducing four tales dedicated to exploring the magic of friendship. First, Applejack and Pinkie Pie enter a baking contest! Then, The Cutie Mark Crusaders team up with Discord, Spike enlists Princess Celestia to help him find a birthday present, and finally, Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor chase down a mysterious ghost.

Will I read it- God, no.

Suki-tte Ii na yo, Volume 1 by Kanae Hazuki

Mei Tachibana has spent her 16 years without making either boyfriend or friends. One day, she injures a popular boy in school, Yamato Kurosawa, because of a misunderstanding but for some reason it seems that he takes a liking to her and one-sidedly claims that they’re friends. Furthermore, he not only protects Mei from a stalker, he does it with a kiss…?!!

Will I read it- yup. Sounds fluffy enough to be a quick read.

I think it’s safe to say this is more miss than it is hit. Yikes!

Have any of you gone through your  Goodreads recommendations and found some gems? Tell me about it.

More Monday – Standalones that I wish had sequels

aka The time I had trouble saying goodbye

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

You guys! I have a problem with letting go. I admit that. And now, here we are with a list that shouldn’t even exist except for my odd clinging to their world.

(and Carry On by extension)

In the case of Carry On, I just want more of Simon and Baz’ love story, and I want to know that they both get to live that normal and happy life that they deserve. I want to know if maybe Simon gets his powers back. Maybe. Hopefully?

For Fangirl, I just want to see Cath flourish into the amazing author that she can be. I want to see her road to publication while balancing a personal life. I want the mundane, everyday story of her and Wren’s life post-college.

Eleanor & Park

Maybe that’s what my relationship with Rainbow Rowell’s work will always be. Me, left wanting more. In this case, I just want more of an ending. Their story is ended so abruptly that I can’t help but think it was intended to have a sequel, but that it never came through. Maybe…

The Upside of Unrequited

I would have added Simon here as well, but we’re getting Leah on the Offbeat, so I’m content for now. Honestly, this addition is just me wanting to be a nosy sneak. I wanna see all of Molly’s future relationships. Does she finally find ‘the one’? Or maybe she and *name redacted* stayed together. I hope so.

One of Us is Lying

I feel like this one may not be necessary either because I hear that it’s getting a tv series adaptation, but still. I’m here for the ships. That’s all.

Pride and Prejudice

Did Darcy really get his shit together, or was his confession of love just a temporary leave of his sensibilities? Who else does he unwittingly shun? What about the other Bennet sisters???? Come on. I. Need. To. Know!

What are the stories that you find hard to let go?

Faves – Best books of the year…

aka That time that I struggled to make a decision…

This was the hardest decision I’ve had to make all year. I’m sure of it. But, I somehow managed to get it done.

In no particular order, because THAT would have been IMPOSSIBLE to choose, here are my absolute favorite books this year.

If I Die Before I Wake

I’ve been gushing about this book ever since I read it (see all my gushing here), and honestly, if this didn’t make my list something would be wrong.

Pet Semetary

This was one of those moments where the book and the movie are perfectly in sync, and I truly appreciated that. The spook factor was high. It brought up all the nostalgic feelings of my first time watching the movie and being hooked on Stephen King adaptations.

History Is All You Left Me

Is this a surprise to anyone who follows my blog? Anyone at all? I don’t think so, because I am the biggest Adam Silvera stan that there ever was, and anything he writes is pure gold as far as I’m concerned. There were tears, but the story in and of itself was simply beautiful. And worth the tears.

They Both Die at the End

I’m still not over this. It hurts so good. Rufus and Mateo are my new faves tbh. I gushed more here.

Carry On

This one is Becky Albertalli level sweet. Cavities are a guarantee and Baz and Simon are the perfect couple. Also Simon is the best anti-hero ever written. I can see myself rereading this time and again, falling even more in love with their love.

There were so many more amazing books that I read this year, but I couldn’t possibly list them all. What books stayed with you over these 365? Any on my list?
